Viskan — Route & Safety Brief
Borås → Åskloster (river mouth) → Varberg · 3 paddlers, single sit-in touring kayaks · departing 4 August
River runs downstream the whole way (~80 m drop over ~100 km). Distances are river-km from the Öresjö outlet (N Borås); Borås centre ≈ km 5. ±1–2 km. Data: OpenStreetMap + SMHI.
1. The route at a glance
| River paddling (Borås → sea) | ~100 km |
| Sea leg (mouth → Varberg) | ~15 km open Kattegat |
| Total | ~115 km |
| Mandatory portages | 7 (dams/power stations) |
| Potential portages / rapids to line | ~4 |
| Suggested duration | 5 river days + 1 weather-dependent sea day |
2. Day-by-day plan (~6 h/day paddling + portaging)
Effort is front-loaded: 7 of the dams are in the first 50 km, so those days are short-distance but slow. The lower half is longer but easy.
Recommended — 5 river days + 1 optional sea day (beginner pace)
| Day | Stretch | ~km | Portages / notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Borås → above Viskafors | ~20 | Rydboholm lift. Camp before the Viskafors canyon |
| 2 | Viskafors → Rydal | ~16 | Viskafors ⛔ + Seglora + Rydal — 3 tough portages, slow |
| 3 | Rydal → below Skene | ~14 | Stämmemad, Kinnaström, Kungsfors — portage-dense, urban |
| 4 | Skene → Horred / Fotskäl | ~28 | Few lifts, best paddling; wild-camp (no shelters near here) |
| 5 | → Veddige → Åskloster (mouth) | ~22 | Kullagård lift, then easy run to the sea |
| 6 | Sea leg to Varberg | ~15–18 | Calm-morning only — else car pickup at the mouth |
If a day runs long or the group is tired (esp. Days 1–3), stop early. Don't push tired beginners near dams.
Faster alternatives
Same ~100 km and the same 7 mandatory portages — fewer days just means longer, harder days. Both end at Åskloster (river mouth); add the optional sea day to reach Varberg. August daylight is long (~05:00–21:30), which helps the big days. For your beginner group the 5-day plan above is strongly recommended — treat these as fitness/experience-dependent.
4-day — moderate–hard (~22–30 km/day, ~2 portages/day)
| Day | Stretch | ~km | Portages |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Borås → Viskafors | ~22 | Rydboholm, Viskafors ⛔ |
| 2 | Viskafors → Kinna | ~24 | Rydal, Stämmemad |
| 3 | Kinna → Horred / Fotskäl | ~30 | Kinnaström, Kungsfors, then easy meander |
| 4 | Horred → Åskloster (mouth) | ~24 | Kullagård |
3-day — hard, experienced only (~24–38 km/day, ~9–11 h days)
| Day | Stretch | ~km | Portages |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Borås → Rydal | ~38 | Rydboholm, Viskafors ⛔, Rydal |
| 2 | Rydal → Horred / Fotskäl | ~38 | Stämmemad, Kinnaström, Kungsfors, then long meander |
| 3 | Horred → Åskloster (mouth) | ~24 | Kullagård |
The 3-day plan packs 3 portages into each of two ~38 km days — that's ~9–11 h on the go. Not advised at low August water in loaded touring kayaks, or for beginners. Only take it on with strong fitness and self-rescue confidence.
3. Water level — what to expect in early August
From SMHI's Åsbro gauge (lower Viskan, 1977–2026):
- Early-August median ≈ 13 m³/s near the mouth — under half the annual norm. This is the low-water season.
- Highly variable: recent early-Augusts ranged 1.3 m³/s (2018 drought) to 53 (2023). 27 % of early-Aug days are below 5 m³/s.
- The gauge is near the mouth (whole catchment). The upper river you start on (Borås→Kinna) carries far less — likely ~3–5 m³/s → shallow, rocky, expect wading/dragging.
Consequences: low water is *safer* (gentler rapids) but *slower* and hard on hulls. Bring hull-repair tape and neoprene booties.
Check 3–5 days before departure:
- SMHI Åsbro gauge / Vattenwebb — current flow
- YR.no — rainfall the week prior (Viskan is flashy; rain bumps levels fast)
- If it's been a dry July, consider starting at Kinna/Skene to skip the scrapiest, most portage-heavy section.
4. Potential problems (ranked)
1. Viskafors canyon (km ~22) — 25.5 m fall. The one genuinely dangerous point. Strong intake current *above* the dam: take out well upstream on river-left. Never drift toward the intake. 2. Low water — grounding, dragging, hull wear; slower than the map suggests. 3. The sea leg — exposure, wind, Getterön. Have a hard "end at the mouth" fallback (see §6). 4. Strainers: fallen trees, beaver dams, wire fences across the water — all documented on Viskan. The classic river killer. Slow into every blind bend; never paddle into a strainer — get out and walk it. 5. Rocks everywhere — plastic touring hulls cope; carry repair tape. 6. High banks — landings can be hard; scout takeouts above every dam early.
5. Portage rule for beginners
In loaded touring kayaks at low water: do NOT run any rapid. Line it or carry it. Touring hulls are long and don't turn fast in rock gardens — running rapids is where beginners swim and pin boats. Get out on the correct bank *above* each dam, scout from upstream, carry in relays (3 people = easy).
6. Sea-leg go / no-go checklist (mouth → Varberg)
This is not a beginner leg. Only attempt if ALL are true — otherwise take the car pickup at Åskloster:
Safer alternative: finish the expedition at the river mouth and do the Varberg coast another day from a Kayakomat with a guide.
7. Emergency & admin
- Emergency: 112 (SOS Alarm — police/ambulance/rescue). Non-urgent medical advice: 1177.
- Share your position: keep phones charged (power banks); learn to send a pin / use what3words so you can give exact coordinates.
- Hospitals near the route: SÄS Borås (upper river) · Skene lasarett, Mark (mid-route, Kinna/Skene) · Varbergs sjukhus (lower river & coast).
- Float plan: leave your route + daily targets + this brief with a contact at home; check in from town wifi/signal each day.
- Camping: *allemansrätten* allows one night in most spots — not on private hydro-station land, cultivated fields, or close to houses. See the separate camp/vindskydd sheet.
- Car shuttle: leave one car at the finish (Åskloster, or Varberg if sea-legging), start with the other from Borås.
- Don't drink untreated Viskan water (legacy contamination in sediment) — refill from taps; filter as backup only.
